Fri, 27 November 2009 ![]() This holiday week, DJDeedle dials the beat down a little. Or does he? This Deedlecast is all sleight of hand, smoke and mirrors, and you'll never guess what's coming next. Comments[0] |
Fri, 20 November 2009 ![]() Technology is notoriously fickle. What today is state-of-the art is laughably dated tomorrow. Though the digital world may be moving from quaint 32-bit to zippy 64-bit, this digital deejay is in no hurry. Find all this computer architecture stuff a little mystifying? No worry. Leave it all to DJDeedle - for now, your 32-bit DJ. This week's Deedlecast weaves the old and the new, the digital and the analog, the electronic and the acoustic. The music may be virtual, but the DJ is very real. Comments[0] |

Sun, 8 November 2009 ![]() A piece of Friday's Deedlecast, Cosmology, this single is a DJDeedle remix/mashup of two youtube creations, a moving and haunting tribute to Sagan and his work, "Cosmos," and an ode to science and man's place in the cosmos, featuring Sagan and his colleague scientists, Bill Nye, Stephen Hawking, Richard Feynman, and Neil DeGrasse Tyson. The beauty of the song is not the voices and scraps of sound, but the way they are put together. Comments[0] |
Fri, 6 November 2009 ![]() "If you want to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe." Carl Sagan, "Cosmos" Cosmology is the study of the universe and humankind's place in it. When DJDeedle was a young geeky human, one of his heroes was the famed astronomer, astrophysicist, and cosmologist, Carl Sagan. Your humble deejay even had the fortune to meet Sagan, and hear him speak just a year or two before the astronomer's unexpected death in 1996. This week, the week of Sagan's November 9 birthday, DJDeedle salutes him with a tapestry of sound that, like the cosmos, is fluid, but lumpy, sometimes dark, and sometimes sublimely beautiful. This Deedlecast starts with Sagan's voice, and ends with a DJDeedle remix/mashup of two youtube creations, a moving and haunting tribute to Sagan and his work, "Cosmos," and an ode to science and man's place in the cosmos, featuring Sagan and his colleague scientists, Bill Nye, Stephen Hawking, Richard Feynman, and Neil DeGrasse Tyson. Sat, 10 October 2009 ![]() Through the magic of Twitter, DJDeedle's had the great fortune of finding the work of Harold Pichol. Harold's musical creation, "Capucine," has a sensual groove, and DJDeedle just couldn't resist tinkering with it, and mix/mashing it with Madonna's sensual groove, "Substitute for Love." Harold's story, along with his other musical and artistic works, are available at his website: http://www.haroldito.com. Check it out. This week, it's a collection of beats ranging from the rock, reggae, and R&B variety to beat break, metal, dub, hipop, and jazz. Remember, as Richard Buckminster Fuller, the inventor of the Bucky Ball, famously said, “There is no such thing as a failed experiment, only experiments with unexpected outcomes.” This week's Deedlecast experiment is just one of those unexpected outcomes. Fri, 2 October 2009 "Every great truth begins as a blasphemy."
-- George Bernard Shaw "Irreverence is the champion of liberty." -- Mark Twain Wednesday, September 30 was International Blasphemy Day,
the day to thumb your nose at religion. Clearly something as fun as
blasphemy should not be confined to only one day. So, this week
DJDeedle touches the third rail of any discourse, religion. Though
DJDeedle is most decidedly a skeptic and nonbeliever, utterly and
firmly unchurched, he realizes that artists throughout the ages,
including musicians, have included religious images and references in
their creations. Modern musicians from Depeche Mode to Johnny Cash and the Doobie Brothers and Kanye West have included references to Jesus in their works, and others like Jesus and Mary Chain and MC 900 Foot Jesus even included everyone's favorite imaginary friend in their band names. If these august artists can take liberties with religion, so can DJDeedle. Exercising your freedom of and from religion can be fun, and above all, entertaining. Comments[0] |
Fri, 25 September 2009 ![]() Though the tunes in this Deedlecast have nothing to do with Alfred Hitchcock's classic movie, North by Northwest, the show starts with one of DJDeedle's favorite cheesy Cary Grant double entendre movie lines. Phillip Vandamm: What possessed you to come blundering in here like this? Could it be an overpowering interest in art? Roger Thornhill: Yes, the art of survival. This week's show is intended both to satisfy your overpowering interest in art, as well as helping you survive. For those of you who, like DJDeedle, can't get enough of Alfred Hitchcock's genius, try Music for Murder, from June 22 of 2007. Comments[3] |

Fri, 21 August 2009 The Woodstock Music and Art Fair held on a dairy farm in Bethel, New York, 43 miles southwest of the town of Woodstock forty years ago changed the history of rock and roll. For better or worse, the 32 acts in the Woodstock concerts captured the zeitgeist of the age with the diverse sounds of rock legends like Janis Joplin, The Who, Jefferson Airplane, the Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, etc. Though four decades have passed, and a fickle music industry and fans have diverged from the sound of 1969, the sounds of the 60s still live today as echos in modern rock, and modern rockers owe much to their Woodstock forebears. Like the those at Woodstock, rock music has mutated, transformed, adapted, and survived. This week DJDeedle salutes not Woodstock, but rock music itself, punk, metal, Brit, garage, grunge, indie, and even electronic. The sound of this week's Deedlecast is rock music, but the flavor is definitely DJDeedle. Enjoy this rock block. Comments[0] |

Fri, 7 August 2009 Over thirty years ago the first digital arcade games took the U.S. and the world by storm. Pong and Space Invaders revived the long moribund arcade industry, and spawned a digital revolution. These early two-dimensional games set the game industry on fire, and the world would never be the same again. This week, DJDeedle harkens back to those early days with a little digital invasion of his own. What digitalism did for games, digitalism has done to music as well. It's time to be invaded. Are you ready? For those of you who just can't get digital enough, check out "Twisted Digital" from September of 2007. Comments[0] |
Fri, 31 July 2009 Social networking is among the many things, like identity theft and pop-up advertising, made simpler and easier by modern digital technology. It is not that we didn't meet people or stay in touch with friends and family before the internet connected us all to spam and Youtube. But with all this new connectivity, even staying in touch with people and meeting new people has been streamlined and systematized, and made almost instantaneous and compulsive. The trouble is that with Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, and all the other networks, being privy at all times to our connections' many thoughts, moods, exclamations, whims, concerns, causes, photos, home videos, humors, disappointments, and the other detritus of the human endeavor can be vexing and overwhelming to say the least. Sometimes receiving an update a minute about the state of mind of the cousin of the woman who was college roommates with the girlfriend of the guy with whom you formed a punk band briefly in the 80s can put us to the saturation point of digital connectedness. Today's Deedlecast speaks to the facebook frustration phenomenon.
Even DJDeedle is not immune from social networking. Want to follow the unselfconscious and shameless self promotion of DJDeedle? Find him on Twitter at http://twitter.com/djdeedle or Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/djdeedle

Fri, 26 June 2009 Ian Fleming's James Bond is not the most complex of characters. But the franchise of films has given us some of our most memorable cinematic moments and cultural clichés. Time marches on for everyone but James Bond, who never seems to get older (except for that unfortunate return of Sean Connery at 53 in Never Say Never Again). The Bond fighting megalomaniac billionaires and malevolent governments in 2009 hasn't changed much since Dr. No (1962) and From Russia with Love (1963), though the world has changed drastically from those Cold War Ian Fleming days. The whole Bond milieu is a parallax, where the character of James Bond is an almost fixed point with the world moving rapidly around him. This week, DJDeedle takes some of the iconic Bond themes and sounds as his fixed point and moves the musical world rapidly around them. And because going to the movies just isn't the same without it, if you listen carefully, DJDeedle's even thrown in the popcorn. A word of warning: This Deedlecast contains some rude words, for your ears only. This Deedlecast is a fully caffeinated blend designed to have a similarly profound effect. Careful, you might find yourself addicted. Comments[0] |
Fri, 12 June 2009 ![]() June is Gay Pride Month, and this weekend in Washington, DC is Capital Pride weekend. Though some even in the gay community think that the time for pride parades and festivals has passed, given the the civil rights gains and losses of the past year, it's more important than ever to be visible and demonstrate our renewed determination. This is the 21st century and civil rights are the killer apps we all need in equal measure, regardless of your operating system, gay or straight. This weekend, go gay. It's better than sex. Just a note: this Deedlecast contains some strong emotions, sentiment, and language. Also, remember - parties and festivals are the only kinds of gay bash allowed - ever. Comments[0] |
Fri, 5 June 2009 ![]() News that Vince Shlomi, aka the "Slap Chop guy" or the "Sham Wow guy," was arrested for felony battery when a game of slap and tickle with a Miami prostitute turned violent, prompted DJDeedle to take some liberties with Slap Chop guy's infomercial. Actually, DJDeedle took liberties with a youtube spoof, Slap Rap Featuring Vince (Slapchop Remix), that takes its own liberties with that famous infomercial to hilarious effect. This show also features a musical take on Christian Bale getting slap happy himself and throwing a superstar sized tantrum. DJDeedle strenuously opposes and abjures violence of any kind, particularly by infomercial and film stars with inflated egos. So, this week, let's all get a little slap happy at their expense. Now that it's time to take them to task, they've all come down with Charlie Brown Syndrome, crying, "why is everybody always picking on me!?" Fri, 20 February 2009 ![]() Computers, the internet, and digital technology have altered forever the relationship between musical artists and their fans and listeners. Digital artists, particularly bootleggers, have altered this relationship further using computers to rework classics and forgotten favorites, weaving them into the unique 21st Century sound, not quite old, and not entirely new. The "download," the essential ethereal link between you and DJDeedle, is the last step in the creative process. Without the magic of the download, Deedlecast would not be possible. This week's Deedlecast salutes the efficient and effective system by which you get your weekly dose of the 21st Century sound. "Downloading" marks the third anniversary of DJDeedle's podcasts. Fri, 14 November 2008 ![]() Once the cornerstone of hand-made mixing, the art of the mixtape essentially has been lost, a casualty of sometimes cruel technological progress and fickle fashion. Somehow, a drag-and-drop iTunes playlist just doesn't have the magic of a lovingly and painstakingly crafted mixtape labored over for hours in unglamorous real-time analog. The casette tape has gone the way of the dodo, and even the compact disk rides off into the technological sunset. But there is life after life for the mixtape in the virtual afterworld: a place where every song is selected with utmost care, enjoyed in real-time, every minute savored, and variety and innovation transcending what many saw as the cramped and archaic medium of the cassette tape. DJDeedle presents the mixtape essentials. A salute to cassette culture. Caution: As with any good mixtape, there are few choice words in this one. Comments[0] |
Fri, 7 November 2008 ![]() Hipsters, flipsters, and finger-poppin' daddies -- knock me your lobes. Hipster or Hepcat, as used in the 1940s, referred to aficionados of jazz, in particular modern jazz, which became popular in the early '40s. The hipster adopted the lifestyle of the jazz musician, including their manner of dress, slang terminology, use of cannabis and other drugs, relaxed attitude, sarcastic humor, self-imposed poverty, and relaxed sexual codes. What does it mean to be hip? The hip thing is to be able to perform the exactly appropriate action at all times, and that not easy, daddio. When in doubt, be cool. That's all there is to it. Regardless of whether you are hepcat or a square, this week, DJDeedle's got you covered and will get you into this 21st Century reinterpretation of the Hepcat Club.

Sun, 12 October 2008 ![]() This is not a full Deedlecast, but rather a very short single. DJDeedle friend and radio pioneer, John Pemble, is a master of the ambient drone musical genre, a type of music that patiently explores particular sounds, tones, or musical phrases by sustaining them for extended periods and varying them slightly. Pemble has produced an album of his musical and tonal creations, called "Subtle Reminders: Juno 60 Ambient Electronic Music." John's album is available for purchase on Itunes and Amazon, and I highly recommend doing so by following the link provided on his website, http://johnpemble.com. This DJDeedle single is a combination of one of Pemble's album tracks, "Intimate Softness," and "Out of Time," from the soundtrack of the BBC series, "Torchwood." John Pemble's subtle and moving F major tones just weave seamlessly with those of the orchestral television piece. Fri, 19 September 2008 ![]() This Deedlecast, "Metropolis," is inspired by the recent news that key scenes from the controversial and somewhat inscrutable 1927 silent film,"Metropolis," have been rediscovered in Argentina. Upon its initial release, according to Zeitmagazin, "the film flopped with critics and audiences alike. Representatives of the American firm Paramount considerably shortened and re-edited the film. They oversimplified the plot, even cutting key scenes. The original version could only be seen in Berlin until May 1927 – from then on it was considered to have been lost forever." Cutting key scenes and re-editing the film had the effect of making its true meaning opaque and the film nearly incomprehensible; but it created a haunting and mysterious work of cinematic art. With these new scenes, the mystery of the true meaning of the film "Metropolis" and the controversy that has surrounded the timeless film since 1927 may finally have been laid to rest. With the passing of this mystery, DJDeedle feels that the world loses something intangible, yet valuable, and creates a "Metropolis" soundscape filled with inscrutable and controversial electronic aural inputs he hopes are worthy of the look, feel, and mystery of this enduring cinematic masterpiece. All robots depicted in this Deedlecast are purely fictional, and have no relation to me. This Deedlecast features a treatment of Weekend Players' "I'll be There for You." Fri, 5 September 2008 ![]() Most US telephone customers are familiar with Jane Barbe (pronounced "Barbie") (July 29, 1928—July 18, 2003). Even though few of us ever met her, we have all heard her voice many times and know her as the "Telephone Lady" or the "Time Lady." Jane Barbe was an American voice actress who did the later voice recordings for the Bell System. Her voice is heard by millions of people every day speaking for the telephone networks (changed numbers, disconnects, circuits busy, etc.), Bell Laboratory computers, The National Bureau of Standards, announcing ETC's Audichron® (formerly Audichron Company) time, temperature, and weather services, and on many voice mail systems nation wide. Her predecessor was Mary Moore, who was known for using a distinctive pronunciation of 9 (Ny-un) and 5 (Fy-uv). The distintive pronunciation was required because, on a poor quality line, "nine" and "five" can sound very similar. DJDeedle dedicates this Deedlecast to these telephonic legends. Just note. Those too young to remember who "Ma Bell" was may be too young for some of the language in this podcast. Comments[2] |
Fri, 29 August 2008 ![]() Now that the country at long last has begun to come to it senses, two sensible and fair-minded states in the union have decided, at least for the time being, that marriage should not be restricted solely to people like Britney Spears and strangers who met the day before on a reality television show. You know, heterosexuals. This sudden unexpected moment of openmindedness, although limited to two states and the always sensible Canada, has given gays and lesbians the urge to make solemn what long before had to remain secret, and more recently, less secret, but unsolemnized and unrecognized by the civil authorities. Two couples who are dear friends of your humble DJ have chosen to do just that: make it solemn, and make it legal (void where prohibited, some restrictions apply, see store for details). This week's Deedlecast is a salute to these rock steady couples, and others like them, who comprise the new Rock Steady Group. Cheers and mazal tov! Dale and Kevin, Matt and Alex, DJDeedle wishes you many years of health and happiness. Comments[0] |

Fri, 15 August 2008 ![]() Today's musical landscape would be much different if not for the Supremes, and particularly, Diana Ross. The Supremes were the most popular "girl group" of the 1960's, and the most successful vocal group of the period after the Beatles. The Supremes released hit after hit, charting a dozen number one hits between 1964 and 1969. Ultimately, in 1969, the original group split up, with Diana Ross going more or less solo, touring as Diana Ross & the Supremes, though without Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson. The influence of the Supremes was vital in shaping the Motown sound and R&B. Similarly, the influence of Diana Ross and her solo work on R&B and Disco cannot be understated. The sounds they pioneered can be found throughout today's music, and modern musicians, both female and male, owe them a debt of gratitude for their groundbreaking work. This week, DJDeedle salutes the queens of popular music, both as a group and in their solo careers, the supremely special Supremes. Comments[1] |

Fri, 27 June 2008 ![]() Just a year ago, on June 29, 2007, Apple shocked the world with the introduction of the ultimate hand-held gadget to date -- the Iphone. And next week, Apple will release it's second edition of their ultimate do-dad. The Iphone is a unique phenomenon in the culture: simultaneously pretentious and geeky. Its sleek tactile functionality has made it almost a fetish for owners, and powerfully envy inducing for the rest of us. Though DJDeedle and the Long-Suffering-One have been helpless to resist the multitude of other Apple products, both computers and ipods, we have thus far resisted the Iphone Borg implants. We've managed this for two reasons: (1) the Iphone is locked to AT&T wireless service; and (2) we like our ipods, and we like our cell phones, but we do not want them to be the same device. The last thing DJDeedle needs is phonecalls interrupting his musical bliss. This Deedlecast is dedicated to both the Iphone haves and have-nots Comments[0] |
Fri, 20 June 2008 ![]() A recording made by Thomas Edison in 1877 has long been thought to be the first artificially recorded sound. It turns out, the first recordings were made in 1860 by Frenchman, Edouard-Leon Scott de Martinville, using a Phonautograph. The recording medium was merely paper covered in soot, so the sound literally emerges from smoke. As a result of advances in audio technology, these phonautograph recordings can now be heard again using lasers which do not damage or degrade these precious artifacts. This Deedlecast starts with the very first sound ever recorded using the phonautograph (albeit altered quite a bit by dj magic). There are some other similarly altered phonautographic bits and pieces sprinkled throughout the show. Learn more about the phonautograph. Comments[0] |

hear Kofi B on a friendly New York cab driver's cd player. Your dj,
ever searching for the best music for Deedlecast, learned everything he

Fri, 30 November 2007 ![]() November of 1968 marked the release to the public of the final report of the "Scientific Study of Unidentified Flying Objects," called the "Condon Report" after the project's director, Dr. Edward U. Condon. Condon had been ordered by the Air Force to conduct a survey of UFO reports to determine once and for all the merit of the phenomenon. In short, the study concluded that UFOs represented only misidentification and hoaxes. DJDeedle, with some help from his friends, both extraterrestrial and terrestrial, updates the data and conclusions of this historic report. Having difficulties downloading? This week, there's absolutely no need to primp, pose and risk rejection just as you get to the front of the line. DJDeedle peers inside the club far too hip to let him in. Fri, 5 October 2007 ![]() It seems that every town in America at one time had a Kiss FM. And in the days before ipods and satellite radio, no matter what city your Kiss FM was in, it had a Saturday night party broadcast for those too young, too shy, or too boring to leave the house. The broadcast was a mix of pop cheese and tunes you could dance to. This week's show is a salute to those broadcasts, but with a little update and DJDeedle's touch. Comments[0] |

Fri, 13 July 2007 ![]() Because I had a couple of requests, I'm posting this DJDeedle original as a single. It's a mashup of "Saved by Zero" by the Fixx and the very obscure classic from the 80's, "Don Quichotte" by Magazine 60. Let me tell you, it was no easy feat finding "Don Quichotte." It was wildly popular in El Paso, TX in the mid 1980's when Deedle was a a mere teenaged music fan, and got extensive airplay before evaporating into obscurity. Fri, 11 May 2007 ![]() The 80's live again on Deedlecast, thanks to the folks at Born Again 80's. The kind folks at Born Again 80's are a fantastic resource for extended mixes and unique remixes of your favorite 80's tunes, and have become a regular stop for DJDeedle's musical research. DJDeedle reminds you that, though "popping" collars on your polo shirt, and stacking polos were both popular in the 1980's, so were Ronald Reagan, star wars defense systems, trickle-down economics, and soaring deficits -- all bad ideas in retrospect. DJDeedle kindly requests that you save the polo stacking, collar popping, pant leg pegging, and Reagan worship for 80s theme parties. Fri, 30 March 2007 ![]() House music has been described as a very rhythmically based electronic or synthesized music that uses a continuous, repeating (usually also electronically generated) 4/4 bassline. Typically added to this foundation are electronically generated sounds and samples of music such as jazz, blues and synth pop, as well as additional percussion. Your humble dj knows that this definition just doesn't really capture the essence of the musical genre. Rather, anyone who really understands house music knows that "House is a Feeling." Fri, 5 January 2007 ![]() As is customary at the start of a new year, this week's Deedlecast reflects on the past to music from a simpler, more carefree, time. This week, DJDeedle puts a stethescope to the heart of Deedlecast to amplify that beat. The beat should not be confused with the groove, and the groove with the beat. It's most important not to allow the beat to drown out the groove. As always, DJDeedle strives to keep the beat beating and the groove grooving. Comments[0] |

For lo these many years, gentle listener, DJDeedle has observed most faithfully a "no Stairway" policy in both his musical and personal affairs. But when the venerable WFMU collected over sixty (60) versions of Led Zeppelin's moldy classic, "Stairway to Heaven," how could a dj resist turning all those minutes of musical roadkill into musical overkill for your listening pleasure? Fear not. DJDeedle will not subject you to all sixty-plus versions. Rather, DJDeedle has reviewed them all, selected the gems, and distilled a them to about 40 minutes. Trust me, after you've listened to this many versions of "Stairway to Heaven" you'll likely adopt a "no Stairway" policy of your own. Comments[0] |

Taking samples from other people's records is one of the most widespread and controversial aspects of computer music. The concept of using snippets of taped sounds to make collages of music is not new. Nowadays, it is easy for anyone to sample sections of recordings from LPs or CDs to make new recordings using your computer sequencer. But is it legal? Deedle's stance on this question can be found at About Deedlecast. Feel free to ponder or ignore the question while you enjoy this week's Deedlecast.

By special request, DJDeedle presents 50 Cent. It should be noted that Mr., um, Cent is very much the rap artist, and therefore there are a few rude words here and there in this Deedlecast. Comments[0] |
Fri, 30 June 2006 ![]() Very little in the way of whole songs here. Rather, DJDeedle serves you a hundred distinct and different flavors, a different taste in every bite. This 31 minute meal is on the light side, a perfect summertime dish for your ears. Bon appetit! Comments[0] |
Fri, 23 June 2006 ![]() Never let it be said that DJDeedle does not listen to his listeners. A loyal listener (from as far back as the days when DJDeedle only worked in CD format) loves Missy Elliott. In his honor, the dj presents this week's Deedlecast, half an hour of Missy mashups. Comments[0] |
Fri, 16 June 2006 ![]() As many of you know, DJDeedle, along with the long suffering one and two dear friends of ours, are training for the Washington DC AIDS Marathon (aka Marine Corps Marathon). Although the torture of the training and the actual marathon are enough incentive, the real reason we are doing this is to raise money for the Whitman Walker Clinic, here in DC. As many of you know, the Clinic is the DC area's leading provider of direct medical care, food, housing, legal services, and other important services for those who have HIV or AIDS and don't have the means to pay. The Clinic was DJDeedle's neighbor for several years, and this dj has volunteered quite a lot of hours there. I can vouch for how vitally important their work is, and how truly grateful their clients are.
As one might imagine, this marathon requires quite a bit of training, consisting mainly of long runs. Fortunately, because Deedle possesses dj powers, he can make his own running mixes. This week Deedle presents just one of the many continuous musical works that keeps him running when the feet say, "no," the knees protest, and there are still miles left to run.
If you are so inclined, please stop by the Deedlecast team page (http://www.aidsmarathon.com/participant.asp?runner=DC-9614&EventCode=MC06) and make a contribution.* We appreciate it, and so do the clients of the Whitman Walker Clinic.
*Since we participants and the Marine Corps pay for all the expenses of the event, every cent our training team raises goes to support the Clinic. Also, your contributions are fully deductible.

Let's revisit the 1980s! Not the Iran-Contra, Ivan Boesky, "mutually assured destruction," yuppies, Ronald Reagan, "Back to the Future," New Coke, Cabbage Patch dolls 1980s. I mean the MTV 1980s. Remember all that great music? DJDeedle does too, just like it was yesterday. This week's 40-minute extravaganza is a continuous mix of mashups of 80s artists from the Bangles, Robert Palmer, Hall & Oats, and Gary Newman, to David Byrne, Dead or Alive, ABC, and Human League. Deedlecast respectfully requests that you leave the collars on your polo shirts down! Comments[1] |
Fri, 2 June 2006 ![]() Rumors of the death of disco have been exaggerated for decades. As we all know, or should know, disco is a purely urban sound whose innovation made possible the rap, hip-hop, house, techno, and trance music we have today. Disco lurks everywhere in modern music. But in this week's Deedlecast, modern music lurks in disco. So, put on your white satin jumpsuit with the wing collar and "get down tonight."
Note: There's a rude word in this Deedlecast. Comments[0] |
Fri, 26 May 2006 ![]() This is Memorial Day weekend, the traditional start of the summer season. Despite the heat and humidity here in our nation's capital, summertime is this dj's favorite time of the year. In celebration of this auspicious season, DJDeedle presents a Deedlecast-length version of a full length album, entitled "Buena Vida," which some of you Deedle fans may remember from my days of mixing in cd format. No mashups here, just pure summertime relaxation and fun for your drive to the beach, or settling back with a nice glass of iced tea at home here in the city. As always, if you like the music you hear on Deedlecast, please support the artists by purchasing their music! If you'd like a copy of the full-length cd, "Buena Vida," please just send me an email! Fri, 19 May 2006 ![]() Whether you were around or not when John, Paul, George and Ringo were the Beatles (the band broke up in 1970), you probably know the unique sound of the Beatles. Often imitated, but never duplicated, the Beatles' sound is immediately identifiable, no matter what some heretic with a sequencer, or computer, or mixing board might do to it. This heretical collection of Beatles mashups represents the distillation of a huge number of mash works, including Deedle's very own "Come Tangerine Together." Comments[0] |

Despite DJDeedle's fascination with manipulation of music and sound through electronic means, nothing quite sounds like real musical instruments, strummed, bowed, plucked or played by human hands. Though this Deedlecast would probably not get you credit in your Music Appreciation (Baroque, Classical, and Romanic Eras) class, it is music DJDeedle hopes you'll appreciate as much as he does.

Remember the good old days? No. Of course you don't. No one does really. At the time, they were neither good, nor old. That's beside the point, though. No matter how bad those days were at the time, there sure was some great music. Through the miracle of time travel, DJDeedle is able to bring back some of what was actually good about the good old days.
Disclaimer: There are a couple of rude words in this podcast. Well, it's actually the same rude word used several times. Comments[0] |

Do you find that you are often too busy to talk to your plants, especially during this busy and critical springtime period? This busy DJ has the same problem. That's why DJDeedle has outsourced his plant talk to Molly Roth, who has so kindly recorded her soothing voice to encourage plants to grow in healthy and happy ways, and scold plant owners who treat them improperly. DJDeedle feels that most all lifeforms, both flora and fauna, not only benefit from Ms. Roth's voice, but mashups as well. I hope the combination of the two has you flowering and branching out to your fullest potential.
Special thanks to WFMU for providing the incomparable Molly Roth. Comments[0] |

Pastiche (pas-'tEsh) ¢?? n. (from Italian pasticcio) 1. a literary, artistic, musical, or architectural work that imitates the style of previous work; also: such stylistic imitation 2. a musical, literary, or artistic composition made up of selections from different works
For many of the same reasons DJDeedle loves mashup music, he also loves pastiche. Actually, mashup is pastiche under the second definition above. Good pastiche crosses time as well as musical genre. This week's Deedlecast is dedicated to this type of music that lets us straddle years, decades, and even centuries.

Just a quickcast of a mashup I just created and needed to send a link to someone. This is Tears for Fears' "Who Killed Tangerine" versus "Come Together" by the Beatles, and also a version of "Come Together" done by Bobby McFerrin (you know the "Don't Worry, Be Happy" guy). Comments[0] |

Chillout is a musical genre well-known to DJDeedle, as his dj'ing interest was first piqued by a set of disks released by Ministry of Sound under that description. DJDeedle especially likes the genre because it encompasses such a wide variety of musical styles, from traditional jazz and pop, to hip-hop, trip-hop, disco, funk, world music, house, fusion, and acid jazz. It isn't so much the individual songs themselves that make them fall into the chillout category. Rather, it is the juxtaposition and interweaving of the disparate types of music that creates the ultimate effect, something greater than the individual songs themselves. Much like mashup music, but on a larger scale. Thus, it is quite the enjoyable challenge to create. This Deedlecast features the work of The Grooveblaster who describes his music thusly: With the greatest respect for The Grooveblaster's vision, DJDeedle has mixed the songs up a bit, and added a DJDeedle nudge or tweak here and there.

Fri, 7 April 2006 ![]() Regardless of how very truly bizarre DJDeedle thinks Michael Jackson is today, in Michael's childhood with the Jackson 5 and the part of his adulthood during the height of his solo career, Jacko was quite uniquely talented. Just as we should not confuse the drug-addled and overweight Elvis of the 1970's with the young talented king of rock and roll, we should not allow Jackson's present day resident alien status to obscure the many great songs of Jacko's best days. Given the great body of mashup work out there based on Jackson's most loved songs, many mashup artists apparently agree with DJDeedle. It was quite the challenge to whittle the huge number of excellent Jackson bootlegs down to this 30 minute Deedlecast.
The usual warning: A few of the songs contain a rude word or two.

As anyone who travels these days is well aware, travel by air can be a trying experience, with all the delays, airport security, cancellations, overbooking, extra charges, etc. Surprisingly, DJDeedle and his long suffering consort are not excepted from these difficulties. Nevertheless, we have persevered and have returned to the SpinDeedle production facilities in Washington, DC to produce more shows for DJDeedle's devoted listeners. Given an infinite amount of time, patience, and a little bit of competence on the part of certain airline employees, (not to mention some extra fees here and there) one can endure and overcome these air transport obstacles. On the other hand, to arrive at your intended destination refreshed and positive in spirit and attitude, one must have a good supply of the dulcet tones of Deedlecast. This week I have put together a soothing anodyne to your travel woes.
So fasten your seatbelts comfortably around you, put your seat backs and tray tables in their upright and locked positions, and drift into air transport bliss. Just a little warning that there are couple of rude words in one of the songs. Comments[0] |

As many of you know, DJDeedle's signal has been relocated temporarily to the island of Kaua'i, Hawaii, and this week's Deedlecast eminates from there. Commensurate with DJDeedle's vacationing mood, this episode is a relaxing melange of many musical flavors, hues, and textures. Comments[0] |

Last week featured the easygoing music of one of my favorites, Alex C. This week, I've chosen another of my favorite bootleggers, Mark Vidler, of Go Home Productions (GHP). Mark Vidler is a professional sound enginer and dj, and you can tell that instantly from his technical skill and the clear and produced sound of his finished product. One of Vidler's particular talents is the mixing of a wide array of popular music with almost universally recognized classic rock guitar riffs and beats.
Part of the fun of listening to mashups and bootlegs is playing "name that tune" with all the different songs mixed in. Here is the answer key for this podcast:

The long suffering one purchased the soundtrack to "Brokeback Mountain" on Itunes the other day. The album has seven achingly beautiful guitar songs by Gustavo Santaolalla. If you've seen the film, you know that Santaolalla's pieces play as vital a role as the Wyoming (actually Alberta) landscape in setting the mood. The music, like the scenery, was almost a character in the film. Comments[0] |

This episode of Deedlecast is a little change of tempo. First, it is a showcase of one of my favorite mashup artists, Alex C. You may have noticed in the previous episodes that mashups tend to be fairly busy pieces of music. There are a number of reasons for this, one of which being that when one mixes what are originally two or more finished and complete songs together, no matter how much technology we throw at them, sometimes there are a few imperfections where the songs just won't mesh. The abundance of beats melodies and such can be used to obscure these imperfections and render them virtually undetectible (except to the artist who will hear them forever).

Now, a new episode of Deedlecast, cooked right here in Washington, DC. This episode features DJ Paul V's wonderful mashup, "The Daily Show vs Audio Bullies vs Aerosmith - Cheney's Got A Gun." Funny stuff, and quintessential inside-the-beltway political (and dark) humor. Also in this episode is Alex H's "KillaVanilla" (Vanilla Ice v. almost everyone), as well as Knackwurst's "Bat Power" and DJ Lance Lockarm's "Bring the Muzic Back." "It's Easy Girls on Film" is my own sendup of Duran Duran. "Seven" and "It Was Easy" are my interpretations as well. Comments[0] |

John Travolta, Olivia Newton John, Snoop Dogg, Aerosmith, Warrant, Run DMC, Simple Minds, Chic, the Cars, J Geils Band, Sting, Lionel Richie (what ever happened to him anyway) . . . It's like an entire radio station in here. This podcast is utterly unexpected, thanks to the miracles of computer technology and mashupology. As my friend, Gavin, put it, "you never really know what you're going to get." DJDeedle stands on the shoulders of the real masters who spun things called "records," like DJ Shelley Pope, (a.k.a., the Black Pope, the self-proclaimed "Human Radio Station"). Mr. Pope appears in a DJDeedle original dub of "The Beamer - Spacer" courtesy of a dumpster dive into the WFMU audio archives. Comments[0] |

Over thirty years ago the first digital arcade games took the U.S. and the world by storm. Pong and Space Invaders revived the long moribund arcade industry, and spawned a digital revolution. These early two-dimensional games set the game industry on fire, and the world would never be the same again.
Social networking is among the many things, like identity theft and pop-up advertising, made simpler and easier by modern digital technology.

"Hi fi" is a term used by audiophiles to refer to high quality reproduction of sound, so free of noise and distortion, and so highly tuned with accurate frequency response as to be extremely faithful to the original performance.

Today is George Washington's birthday, and yesterday was Abraham
Lincoln's. On Monday, because everyone likes a Monday off, we honor
the births of these two American presidents who saved the nation from
threats to its very existence. Today, though, DJDeedle honors our new
president, Barack Obama, who singlehandedly changed to tempo of the
nation at this critical time. For the next four years, maybe eight, we
dance to the beat of DJ Obama.
